English Language Proficiency Requirement

All graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship, must demonstrate English language proficiency for admission. Applicants may satisfy this requirement in one of the following ways:

  1. Earn a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or from an institution located in a recognized English-speaking country where English is the primary language of instruction. Recognized list of English-Speaking countries for graduate admission purposes is provided below.
  2. Submit official TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) OR IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) OR the Duolingo English Test  or PTE (Pearson Test of English) scores that meet or exceed the minimum requirements listed below.
  3. Successfully complete Level 6 of the Intensive English Programat the University of Houston's Language and Culture Center.

Minimum Test Scores

Test scores must be valid and reportable at the time the application is submitted and are generally valid for two years from the test date. Some graduate programs require scores above the university minimum. Applicants should consult the program website for program-specific requirements.
