Mary Rysavy, M.D., FACOG

Mary Rysavy, M.D., FACOG, is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences and the global health director for the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine. She is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist with expertise in healthcare for underserved populations, maternal health, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, and global women’s health.

Prior to joining the Fertitta College of Medicine, Rysavy served as an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston where she worked in the Harris Health System. Before that, while on the faculty at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, she founded the University of Iowa Program in Global Women's Health.

Rysavy's research and quality improvement work focuses on women’s health in low-resource settings. Her international work has included collaborations in Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda, and Brazil. She is a co-founder and president of Friends of Inharrime, an organization focused on community health initiatives in Mozambique, and she has supported community health clinics in Iowa City and Houston. She speaks English, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Rysavy is a dedicated educator and mentor, providing medical education in clinical practice and research. She was recognized with the McGovern Medical School Esteemed Educator Award in 2026. Her mentees have published over two dozen peer-reviewed manuscripts and presented their work at local, national and international meetings. She loves helping her mentees match into excellent residencies and develop careers advancing excellent women’s healthcare.

Rysavy graduated summa cum laude from Saint Louis University and earned her medical degree from the Carver College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was an administrative chief resident. She is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Rysavy lives in Houston with her husband and four daughters.
