For international students: This program meets the requirements for studying in the U.S. with an F-1 or J-1 visa.

 

Application Materials

Applicants must submit the following application and materials to be considered for admission into the Ph.D. in School Psychology program.

Main Application

The following materials should be submitted through the ApplyWeb application:

Your resume should include your academic history, professional experience, and, if applicable, any relevant research and publications.

A background in psychology or related field is necessary for success in this program. Experience working with children or adolescents, especially in schools or related settings, is desireable.

A recommender should be able to comment on your academic potential in graduate school and leadership potential in the field of study. You will provide contact information for references and they will receive an email with instructions.

Write a statement of interest that addresses the following:

  • Why are you interested in a career in school psychology, including relevant experience?
  • Why are you interested in the school psychology program at the University of Houston?
  • What are your research interests, including experience and connection with the University of Houston faculty?
  • What makes you unique as an applicant and likely to succeed in a doctoral program?

Format:

  • 500-1000 words, double-spaced
  • Times New Roman font (12 point)
  • 1-inch margins

Acceptable types of writing samples include:

  • APA-style research paper (preferred)
  • Paper with a topic in School Psychology or a related field (e.g. child development)
  • Other academic or professional writing samples are accepted if the first two options are not available.

Requirements:

  • Maximum 50 pages, double-spaced
  • Must have pagination
  • Papers written in a language other than English require an English translation.
  • Applicants must be the first or solo author of the work.

Publications, poster presentations, and other research projects are appreciated.

  • $50 for domestic applicants
  • $80 for international applicants
All graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, must demonstrate proficiency in English to obtain admission to UH. Many applicants meet this requirement based on earning an undergraduate degree in the United States and do not need to submit documentation beyond their transcript. Interview

An interview is required for admission into the program. The admissions committee will notify the applicant directly regarding the date, time and scope.

 

Admissions Decisions

  • Applicants will receive email confirmation via ApplyWeb when all required documents have been received.
  • Admission decisions will be posted on ApplyWeb. You must formally accept your admissions offer in ApplyWeb in order to enroll.
  • International applicants should review I-20 and financial backing information for documentation needed.
