2010 Excellence in Research & Scholarship Awards
The award is given to faculty who have achieved a substantial record of outstanding research, scholarship or creative activities in their field. Each award carries a $5,000 stipend and a plaque.

2010 Teaching Excellence Awards
This award is given to tenured- or tenure-track faculty in recognition of outstanding achievement in teaching. Recipients are honored with a trophy and a $5,000 prize.

CLASS Awards
The College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS) announces the winners of the 2010 Ross M. Lence Awards for Teaching Excellence.
Awards were presented to CLASS faculty members from each of the following categories: Visual/Performing Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities.
Francesca Behr received the 2010 Ross M. Lence Teaching Award in Humanities. Behr is an Associate Professor of Italian and Classical Studies in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages (MCL)
On April 15, Behr was featured on TheDailyCougar.com where Richard Armstrong, Associate Professor of Classical Studies was quoted in saying, "(The award) is not just a tribute to her hard work in the classroom: she has been involved in many programs with her work with the Honors College and Women’s Studies, but it is also a tribute to my genius for making sure that she got hired"
Her published works include Felling History: Lucan, Stoicism, and the Poetics of Pass (Ohio State University Press; 2007) and articles on Virgil, Roman satire, reception studies, and Italian Renaissance Epic. Learn more about Professor Behr; watch her CLASS Faculty Spotlight video.
Teresa Chapman, an Associate Professor of Dance with the School of Theatre and Dance, is the recipient of the 2010 Ross M. Lence Teaching Award in Visual/Performing Arts.
Chapman has enjoyed a wide variety of experiences in her dancing career. Most memorable were her roles in the Los Angeles Opera’s contemporary version of "The Flying Dutchman" and dancing the role of Cassandra in the Hamburg production of CATS.
Chapman is the Director of the UH Dance Ensemble, and has become well-known in the Houston dance community for her distinctive choreography in Modern dance. The 2010 Spring Dance Concert, Propulsion, will feature Chapman's choreography on April 30 - May 2 at the Wortham Theatre. Learn more about Professor Chapman; watch her CLASS Faculty Spotlight video.
Department of Economics Assistant Professor, Dietrich Vollrath was awarded the 2010 Ross M. Lence Teaching Award in Social Sciences.
Vollrath has been with the University of Houston since 2006 and was the recipient of the University of Houston New Faculty Grant in that same year. His special fields of interests are Economic Growth and Development, Inequality and Macroeconomics and his current research projects include : "Life Insurance and Government Spending", "Land Tenure, Population, and Long-run Growth", and "Measuring Aggregate Agricultural Labor Effort"
Vollrath has been published in the Journal of Economic Growth, Review of Economic Studies,Journal of Development Economics and the Journal of Economic Theory.
In February Vollrath was a presenter at the NBER Growth Meeting in San Francisco and he will be presenting at the 2010 World Bank Conference on Land Policy and Administration in late April. Learn more about Professor Vollrath; watch his CLASS Faculty Spotlight video.
