The University of Houston Dining Services kicked off the fall semester with a mission: to take weekend brunch at its two on-campus dining commons to the next level. While breakfast has always been available on Saturdays and Sundays, this semester Dining Services introduced an enhanced brunch experience.

“We are on a mission to elevate our brunch because we know that life doesn’t stop after Monday through Friday,” said Alexcis Mendoza, UH Dining Services district marketing manager. “Our students are still here. They’re active, they're studying and learning.”

New brunch offerings include avocado toast, an elevated pancake bar, acai and smoothie bowls, breakfast sliders, an omelet station, chicken and waffles, and chicken biscuit sandwiches, among others.

The response from students has been positive. Mendoza noted that many students fuel up at Saturday brunch before heading to TDECU Stadium to cheer on the Cougars.

A standout feature this semester is the Student Choice menu item. Through Instagram polls on @uhfoodie, students vote on four seasonal brunch options, and the winning dish is featured that weekend.

“It’s nice knowing that I have options,” said Abrie Orozco, a nutrition junior.

While she didn’t vote in the poll, Orozco appreciates that Dining Services is asking for student input — and she loves the extended brunch hours.

“I do wake up late, so it’s nice to know that at noon, there’s still breakfast,” said Orozco.

Global Hospitality junior Kamron Jackson agreed, saying last semester he often missed brunch because of early cut-off times. He also praised the variety.

“I think it’s set up well,” said Jackson. “It gives students more options to expand their horizon on food.”

Dining Services continuously gathers feedback and uses it to shape future menus. As the semester winds down, Mendoza says the team is committed to keeping brunch fresh and student focused.

“Whether we’re fueling you for your studies and exams, or fueling you to be the best, most spirited Coog football fan you can be, we’re supporting you in your journey,” said Mendoza.
