University of Houston IT (UIT) provides wireless connectivity throughout the residence halls. Coverage is designed to reach all rooms and lounge areas. The main networks available are UHGuest, UHSecure, and Eduroam.

UHSecure (Recommended)

For phones, laptops, tablets, and most personal devices, UIT recommends connecting to UHSecure. This is a secure, encrypted network that provides the best performance and protection while on campus.

Eduroam is also available. It allows visitors from other participating institutions to connect using their home credentials, and UH users can use it when visiting other campuses.

Wi-Fi Network: uhregistered

There is a special hidden network called uhregistered that is optimized for devices that do not support standard secure Wi-Fi well. This includes many gaming consoles, smart TVs, Roku devices, printers, and similar equipment.

The SSID is not broadcast in order to reduce unnecessary traffic. The only way to use this network is by pre-registering your device’s MAC address with UIT.

While some devices may temporarily work on other networks, changes to those networks can stop them from connecting. Using uhregistered is the best way to ensure reliable service for these types of devices.

How to Register a Roku, Gaming Device, or Similar Equipment

Registering a device for the uhregistered network is straightforward:

1. Log into AccessUH.
2. Look for the icon labeled Register My WiFi Device.
3. Follow the on-screen steps to register your device. You will need the MAC address of the device.

If you do not know how to find the MAC address on your device, check the manufacturer’s instructions or search the GetHelp knowledge base for guidance on common devices.

After you complete the registration, you will receive a confirmation email from UIT. Your registration will remain active for a set period. Before it expires, you will receive a reminder email if you still need the device on the network.
