What keywords should I use when searching for a job?
It might be surprising but most jobs for economics majors do not contain the word “Economist” in the job tittle. Most positions, but not all, with an Economist title are for Ph.D. and Master degrees. You will have more success by searching for job titles and descriptions with the term “analyst”: business analyst, financial analyst, credit analyst, market analyst, industry analyst, marketing analyst, pricing analyst, budget analyst, risk analyst, sales analyst and data analyst are typical terms. Look for job descriptions and qualifications requiring data analysis, statistical analysis, finding relationships, ability to explain complicated issues to a general audience, collect and understand market data, forecasting, produce data visually, think critically, find trends and patterns in data; and collect, summarize and interpret data. Good communication skills both written and oral are just as important to communicate the technical analysis to non-technical audiences like clients, policy makers and management. Here are some job titles which hire economics majors.
