About UH Chamber Music Institute
Each UH Chamber Music Institute day includes:
- Guided rehearsals and intensive coaching sessions with UH faculty.
- Studio classes that focus on TMEA audition music, solo repertoire, and technique.
- Optional private lessons (additional fee)
- “Listening Labs” featuring fascinating special guests, artistic experiments, and inspiring group conversations on topics including:
- Crimes Against Bach? Listening to Bach recordings- The Pursuit of Happiness: Enlightenment ideals and the birth of the string quartet- Sing on string - “singing” masterclass with UH voice faculty- Bow dance - “dancing” masterclass with UH dance faculty- Social lunch hours with games and trivia, historic recording listening parties, casual performances, and other fun community building activities.
The Institute culminates in an exciting final performance, featuring all ensembles alongside our faculty.
Application Requirements
Application Requirements:
Pre-formed string quartets receive priority placement into this program. Each quartet member must submit an individual application.Individual applicants without a pre-formed quartet will also be considered, but only if there are spaces available for additional ensembles. Applicants without a pre-formed ensemble must submit a video performance with their application, so that we may form ensembles of players with similar levels of experience.
- A video recording (YouTube or Vimeo link) of your playing recorded after Dec. 31, 2023 (repertoire selection can be two contrasting TMEA all-state audition etudes, or a any solo that demonstrates contrasting styles)

FAQ:
Can my child carpool with another student to/from camp? What if someone else needs to pick them up?
- Students are allowed to carpool or be picked up by someone other than their listed parent/guardian ONLY if the authorized person is listed in our records. That list can be updated anytime by emailing caa@uh.edu, subject: Chamber Music Institute Pick Up Authorization
Do you offer any group discounts?
- We no longer offer group or other discounts. We encourage students to take advantage of our Early Bird and Priority Registration deadlines for discounted tuition.
How/when do I pay?
- Once your registration form is processed, we will email you with your invoice and any additional information needed. Invoices with a link to payment will be sent from caa@central.uh.edu 3-5 business days after the registration deadline.
- Payment deadlines will be included with your invoice.
When will I receive a detailed schedule and student handbook?
- Our staff will share detailed information with parents and students in the weeks leading up to camp.

About Our Faculty
Kirsten Yon, violin, Associate Professor of Violin and Head of the String Division at the Moores School, has collaborated in performances with Rohan De Silva, Rodney Friend, Lucie Robert, Emanuel Borok, Norman Fischer, and Desmond Hoebig. Her active solo career includes recital engagements and masterclasses throughout the United States (including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall), Brazil, Czech Republic, England, South Korea, Honduras, Mexico, Germany, France, Iceland, and Norway. Mann-Wen Lo, violin, Professor of Practice at the UH Moores School, performs extensively throughout the world in some of the most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Jordan Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Walt Disney Hall, among others. She has collaborated in concerts with members of world-renowned string quartets such as the Juilliard String Quartet, the Cleveland Quartet, Quatuor Ysaÿe, and the Takacs Quartet, among others. In addition, she has performed with artists such as Glenn Dicterow, Peter Frankl, Roger Tapping, David Shifrin, Margaret Betjer, and Andrew Shulman. For full bio click here.
Wayne Brooks, viola, is the former principal violist of the Houston Symphony, and Affiliate Artist for viola at the UH Moores School. In addition to solo appearances with the Houston Symphony, he has appeared in chamber music performances with Joseph Silverstein, Lynn Harrell, Yefim Bronfman, Garrick Ohlsson and Christoph Eschenbach. He has participated in the Houston Symphony's former INNOVA series; in performances with Da Camara of Houston, Greenbriar Consortium, and the Mukuru "Arts for AIDS" Series; and in chamber music festivals in Craftsbury, Vermont and Lake City, Colorado. Courtenay Vandiver Pereira, cello, has been acclaimed by the Boston Globe as “an expert player,” and by the New Jersey Star Ledger for her “wonderful technique and creamy sound”. Her music has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, Musikverein (Vienna), and the Gewandhaus (Leipzig). She is former Principal cellist of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, a member of both Mercury Chamber Orchestra and ROCO, and a founding member of the Grammy-nominated ensemble A Far Cry. Evan Leslie, cello and Academy director, is director of the University of Houston’s Community Arts Academy. As a cellist, Evan has performed with the New York Classical Players, New York Chamber Music Festival, The Grand Teton Music Festival, Da Camera of Houston. He has taught at HSPVA, University of St. Thomas, American Festival for the Arts, and UH. An adventurous musician, Evan has recently performed with Catastrophic Theater, Hearts of Animals, and was a guest performer with the "Bad Boys of Cello" (Houston Symphony celli's alter ego). From 2013 – 2020 Evan was Artistic Producer of Lincoln Center’s NY Public Library for the Performing Arts.
