Performances

  • Operas

The Moores Opera Center stages four full operas a year in the spectacular Moores Opera House. Our productions consistently win awards with the National Opera Association, and our graduates have gone on to perform at exceptional institutions such as the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, New York City Opera, the Vienna State Opera, Teatro San Carlo, San Francisco Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Houston Grand Opera.

  • Annual Performing Series

The Moores School invites a variety of guest artists on campus to collaborate with our faculty, perform for our patrons, and engage our students through a combination of recitals and master classes.

  • Student Recitals

Student recitals are a significant part of the academic curriculum as well as a treasured aspect of the Moores School experience.  Each program has their own guidelines on recitals, but the overall student recital calendar is published publically.  The entire community is welcome to come listen to our budding stars.
  • Ensembles

From choirs to orchestras, from chamber music quartets to jazz bands, our school supports a wide variety of award-winning ensembles. Throughout the year, audiences have a chance to witness the development of our young musical phenoms as they explore the joys of performing with their fellow students.

Outreach

  • Community Arts Academy

The Community Arts Academy provides a comprehensive approach to musical instruction for students ages 6 and older, with access to Moores School of Music resources and a holistic approach for the study of piano, voice, and violin. Our classes are centered around peer-learning, theory, and prioritizing individual goals. Students have access to multiple collegiate-level performance opportunities that are exclusive to the University of Houston. CAA is a non-credit, non-degree granting program.
  • Camps and Festivals

Each year, the Moores School provides a steady calendar of camps and festivals.  They provide young musicians the opportunity to take master classes, compete for awards, exhibit their skill, and receive feedback from established guest artists, in an supportive, musically-rich environment.
  • Professional Development

In addition to degree-granting academic programs, we also welcome postbaccalaureate students who want to gain a Texas teaching or Kodály method certification.

Venues

  • Moores Opera House

    Moores Opera House

The 800 seat Moores Opera House, the crown jewel of our facilities, is arguably the finest university opera production facility in the country. It features a Frank Stella art installation, one of the largest stages in Houston, an enormous orchestra pit, and sublime acoustics. It allows performances of the largest operas while still maintaining a sense of intimacy. Most importantly, it gives young voices a chance to develop properly by not subjecting them to the demands of an acoustically unforgiving large hall.
  • Dudley Recital Hall

    Dudley Recital Hall

The Dudley Recital Hall has delightful acoustics, but is a more intimate space than the majestic Moores Opera House, seating just over 200 audience members. Dudley is the venue for most of the student, faculty, and guest artist performances, as well as for lecture-recitals and guest lectures.
  • Organ Recital Hall

    Organ Recital Hall

The Organ Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Building features a beautiful Beckerath Organ, and is one of six pipe organs on the UH campus. The hall is dedicated to the organ program’s students for their practice and performance use.
  • Choral Recital Hall

    Choral Recital Hall

The Choral Recital Hall provides our choirs with an exceptional workspace, but also serves as a beautiful forum for intimate recitals. Like Dudley and the Opera House, the hall is equipped with a handmade Steinway grand piano and provides an excellent acoustic experience.”

Moores Opera House

The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston Houses the 800-seat Moores Opera House, the crown jewel of our facilities. It features a Frank Stella art installation, one of the largest stages in Houston, an orchestra pit large enough for 70 to 80 musicians, and sublime acoustics. In addition, the school has fully soundproofed rooms and rehearsal spaces with Steinway pianos and top-of-the-line instruments, additional recital halls, and a dedicated music library within the main music building.
