On Saturday, Oct. 3, the inaugural Houston Futures Festival brought the historic Third Ward neighborhood together for a day of learning, dialogue and entertainment. The inaugural festival featured workshops exploring issues shaping Houston’s future, performances by area artists, a short film and community resources at Eldorado Ballroom and One Emancipation Center. Workshops and discussions addressed education, food insecurity, maternal health, mobility and other pressing challenges facing the region.
Acclaimed Chicago rapper and poet Noname capped the festival with a performance at
Project Row Houses. Known for her sharp lyricism and jazz-inspired sound, Noname has
been recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the best rappers alive and by The New York
Times as one of the most important voices of her generation for her activism. She
has performed on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show and The Late Show and is one
of the few artists to perform twice on NPR’s Tiny Desk. Her latest album, Sundial,
was released in 2023.
