The University of Houston Office of Emergency Management (OEM) encourages all Coogs
to take three simple steps to stay prepared all year round: have a plan, build a kit,
and stay informed.
Have a Plan
- Knowing what to do before an emergency makes all the difference. Ask yourself:
- Do you know how to respond to different types of emergencies?
- Where will you go? Identify safe locations both on and off campus.
- How will you get there? Know your evacuation routes and alternate options.
- How and who will you contact? Share your plans with family, roommates, and friends.
- Practice your plan regularly and keep it updated.

Build a Kit
It is important to have an emergency kit in the event that you need to grab a few items quickly during evacuation, or you need to shelter in your safe location for a few days. Some essential items include:
- Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid supplies and prescription medications
- Copies of important documents
- Hygiene Items
- Phone charger or portable power bank
- Comfort items like a blanket or change of clothes
You should keep enough supplies for three days at a minimum and remember to periodically check the expiration dates on your items.
Stay Informed
The best way to receive timely campus alerts is through the UH Alert. This official notification system keeps the UH community informed during emergencies via text messages, emails, and digital signage. Sign up or verify your contact information in AccessUH to ensure you receive alerts. Learn more about the UH ALERT and how it works.
