2023

• Four students from Chinese Studies have just published their essays in a book entitled: West Meets East: 100 Essays from University Students in the USA. 东西交汇：美国大学生优秀作文100篇. The winning students are: Giselle Campos, Belen Fajardo, Sierra Shepherd, and Wilma Yan-Guttierrez. They are Chinese Studies Majors and Minors. The selection process was highly competitive. 100 essays were selected from more than 300 submissions. Students’ writing and submissions were supervised by Professor Xiaohong Sharon Wen. This collection of essays is published by the prominent Beijing Language and Culture Press, edited by Professor Licheng Gu of Northwestern University.

• UH Student Receives First Place in National Chinese Speech Contest
  Chinese student Zeeshaan Siddiqui participated in the National Chinese Speech Contest (NCSC),
  winning the first place at the college level. The NCSC was hosted by the American Academy of International Culture and Education (AAICE) and co-hosted by the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA-USA).

• Five students’ Chinese essay have selected for publication in “The First Chinese Writing Selection Publication” by CLTA-TEXAS in April 2021
  Chinese Language Teachers Association of Texas (CLTA-Texas) welcomes submissions of outstanding written work from Chinese language learners of all ages and levels to be selected and digitally published in the 1st annual Chinese Writing Selection (CWS). Their writing is selected and published in the 1st Annual Chinese Writing Selection

2019

• Chinese Studies Minor Wins Speech Competition 
  Sunkyung Nguon, an undergraduate student minoring in Chinese language, won the 18th Annual Greater Houston Chinese Speech Contest on November 10. Nguon took first prize in the Non-Chinese Background group.
  
  The competition was held at International Leadership of Texas, Katy-Westpark High School in Richmond. Contestants ranging from kindergarten students to college seniors were divided into age groups and required to deliver three-minute speeches in Mandarin Chinese.
  
  Instructional Assistant Professor of Chinese Studies Jing Zhang worked with Nguon on her speech and pronunciation prior to the competition.
  
  “Thank you so much to Professor Zhang,” Nguon said after her victory. “I saw myself improving a lot, and I’m very happy with the process and the result.”

2013

The Startalk Texas Teacher Program at University of Houston took place July 8-19 and it did extremely well! We had a group of 20 participants selected from 40 applicants. They were from the Greater Houston Area (12), Texas and the other states (8).  Reports about the program have been featured by KUHF - Houston Public Radio, China Daily USA, and The Daily Cougar.

2012

The University of Houston Chinese Studies Program has received a $99,980 grant to launch the STARTALK program over the summer. The program is available to public and private elementary and secondary school teachers, community college professors and instructors at various Chinese heritage schools in Texas.
