Media and the Moving Image

Alessandro Carrera is Professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, where he is Director of Italian Studies and Graduate Director of World Cultures and Literatures. He has a Laurea in Philosophy from the Università degli Studi in Milan, Italy, and a Ph. D. by Publications in Music, Humanities, and Media from the University of Huddersfield, U.K. As a scholar whose production encompasses different fields, he is the author of several books in continental philosophy, literary theory, Italian and comparative literature, classical and popular music, and cinema. In addition to several articles, his publications in English include the edited books, Massimo Cacciari’s The Unpolitical: For a Radical Critique of Political Reason (Fordham UP, 2009), Italian Critical Theory (“Annali d’Italianistica,” 29, 2011), Music and Society in Italy (“Forum Italicum,” 49, 2, 2015), Massimo Cacciari’s Europe and Empire: On the Political Forms of Globalization (Fordham UP, 2016), and Emanuele Severino’s The Essence of Nihilism (Verso Books, 2016). In the field of Italian cinema and film theory, he has published on Pier Paolo Pasolini’s African Orestes and on Roberto Rossellini and the aesthetics of the sublime. He is currently working on a book on Christianity and paganism in Federico Fellini (forthcoming Bloomsbury, 2018).
